After completing a postgraduate education in Risk Management and Insurance, he started his professional career working for Acordia Insurance, today known as Wells Fargo Insurance Brokers in New York City. During this opportunity, he worked with the VIP Affinity lines and a year later he was promoted to the Construction & Real Estate Development Department. While in Acordia, he enhanced his underwriting relationships with insurers’ carriers throughout the United States.
In 2003, he was recruited by Popular Insurance Inc., to be part of the team that developed and created The Puerto Rico Medical Defense Insurance Company, which provides medical malpractice insurance coverage to physicians in the country. His background expertise continues to grow while working at Marsh Saldaña, where he worked in the Commercial Lines Department that included manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers, as well as real estate developers.
After a year covering these assignments, he was promoted to the Construction Department being responsible for surety and risk management programs. He remained in Puerto Rico and during the year 2011, Fernando decided to expand his services and in with his actual partners, Suarez and Martínez, they opened Lighthouse Insurance Group Inc., to attend and develop more markets while bringing innovative ideas, solutions & diversity to the insurance field.
Even though he started his career in medicine, his passion and wishes were always focused on insurance. While he was studying in Mexico, he joined the global leading organization in insurance programs, employee benefits, pension plans and insurance related services worldwide, SeguNet. There he had the opportunity of representing 133 US Insurance Brokers that were operating in 77 cities in 15 countries.
Taking advantage of that opportunity, Suarez Colón remained in that enterprise for two years learning the ropes of reinsurance, excess and surplus lines. Motivated by his own development on the insurance field, he trained in several National Alliance Institutes in California to become a competitive insurance broker.
He moved back to Puerto Rico, and started working in Marsh Saldaña Inc., one of the Puerto Rico’s leading insurance broker agencies. While at Marsh, he became an expert working closely with transportation insurance, sports, entertainment and media. He worked with the manufacturing industry and managed life and health benefits. He was named Sports & Entertainment leader for Latin America & Caribbean and took advantage of the opportunity to raise his negotiation skills in the market while being exposed to highly recognized brokers.
Mr. Martínez has over 22 years of experience, as top performing senior insurance executive. He has set the standard of being a credible, ethical and knowledgeable professional. He worked as an independent insurance agent selling a full range of insurance products including life, disability, property and casualty for more than 10 years.
In 2001, he was recruited by Doral Financial Corporation to start up Doral Insurance Agency, (after Gramm-Leach-Bliley was adopted). As president of Doral Insurance he was successful in helping Doral Financial with the sale of in 2008. After Doral he accepted the position at Banco Popular Inc., as VP Executive of the Popular Insurance overseen Virgin Islands, Popular Mortgage and Mortgage Servicing. During his career he has performed more than thirteen successful insurance portfolio acquisitions.
Martínez-Balbin has been known for providing vision and tactical leadership in all stages of business planning, short-long-term goals, budgeting, forecasting, internal accounting, internal management, operational management and growth. He is remarkably experienced in the definition and direction of targeted sales strategies, crossselling, marketing and promotional campaigns. He has empowered his career obtaining a green belt certification as Six Sigma from Villanova University, transforming all his work experience into an efficient profit.
